“Goldfish Cracker Flavoured Spicy Water”

This photographic series translates the outlandish food creations described by children.

My intention for this project was to create a visual survey of what unbounded culinary imagination could look like. Encouraging children’ inventive minds was the perfect way to generate these ideas that not only pull on our nostalgic heartstrings, but also reflect the spirit of our contemporary food culture.

In March 2020, I received a grant to begin this project which I planned to start by visiting schools, day cares and youth groups to interview children on what their dream meals would be - no limit to stomach capacity or budget. The next week, everything shut down. I scrambled to put together a worksheet that youth could do with their caregivers, hoping that they would be happy to be given 15 minutes of relief. I was overwhelmed with submissions! Here are some of the results.

“Five Layer Pancake Stack with Every Type of Syrup”

“Ice Cream with French Fries And Straws”

“Mac and Cheese Cupcakes”

“Easter Chocolate bunny Milkshake”

“ten peanut butter and jam sandwiches”

“pancake soup”

“Pickles with honey on strawberry jam”
