Carrot Bow Garnish
Ingredients
- 1-2 large carrots
- Toothpicks
- Patience
Instructions
- Take a long, good looking carrot. Square off the carrot by cutting off the 4 sides so that she’s one long square prism.
- Cut the carrot into long strips that are very thin, about 2 mm. Vegetable peelers often make strips that would be too thin, but a mandolin would also work. For each bow, you’ll need 3 lengths and 1 toothpick. If your carrot is super wide, you can cut each strip in half to create two more narrow strips.
- With one strip, make a figure 8 to create the bow with the strip's ends meeting on the same side. Hold with your fingers.
- Use another strip to create the bow ties by placing the centre of the strip below the centre of the figure 8.
- Use your final strip to wrap around the centre of the bow as tightly as you can. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it. If you’re having difficulty anchoring everything together, try holding the pieces down on a surface before step 5 to help them not slip around.
- Anchor the bow gently with a toothpick to go through all layers. It’s best to do this at an angle so the bow can display nicely on the cake.
