Carrot Bow Garnish

Ingredients

  • 1-2 large carrots
  • Toothpicks
  • Patience

Instructions

  1. Take a long, good looking carrot. Square off the carrot by cutting off the 4 sides so that she’s one long square prism.
  2. Cut the carrot into long strips that are very thin, about 2 mm. Vegetable peelers often make strips that would be too thin, but a mandolin would also work. For each bow, you’ll need 3 lengths and 1 toothpick. If your carrot is super wide, you can cut each strip in half to create two more narrow strips.
  3. With one strip, make a figure 8 to create the bow with the strip's ends meeting on the same side. Hold with your fingers.
  4. Use another strip to create the bow ties by placing the centre of the strip below the centre of the figure 8.
  5. Use your final strip to wrap around the centre of the bow as tightly as you can. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it. If you’re having difficulty anchoring everything together, try holding the pieces down on a surface before step 5 to help them not slip around.
  6. Anchor the bow gently with a toothpick to go through all layers. It’s best to do this at an angle so the bow can display nicely on the cake.
